Who is a doctor that specializes in applied psychophysiology and biofeedback?
Psychophysiological doctors are specialized health professionals who use biofeedback training and applied psychophysiological methods in their work. Many psychologists, psychiatrists and neuropsychologists have been trained in the clinical use of these methods. These methods can be combined with cognitive, behavioral, and/or pharmacological approaches.
How long will the initial evaluation and subsequent treatment last, and how much will it cost?
The initial evaluation, which is typically done all on the same day, can range from 1 ½ -4 hours, depending on the type of testing that is required. The results are then carefully analyzed and made available with 5-10 days. Treatment may or may not be recommended depending on these results. The length of therapy depends upon the type and severity of symptoms being treated. Often, treatment technologies are combined with cognitive/behavioral therapies. Treatment protocols can typically range from 8 to 30 treatments, with 13-20 sessions being the most common.
The cost of therapy compares to professional services such as testing or psychotherapy. Neuropsychological consultation and evaluation is typically covered by most health insurance companies. Similarly, cognitive/behavioral treatments are also often covered, although policies differ. Policy benefits differ amongst insurance companies regarding biofeedback and psychophysiological treatments, as well. Please consult with our staff (Sharon Monaco, 630-339-5300) and your insurance company regarding questions pertaining to insurance coverage. Our staff, as a professional courtesy, will submit your claims to your insurance company and pre-authorize treatment, as necessary. Reasonable payment plans are also available for services, as needed.
Will I need to stop my medication?
Consultation with your prescribing physician or health care provider is essential when modifying any medication regimen. When a medical or psychiatric condition is being treated, you will be encouraged to continue following up with your ongoing medical providers. You may be requested to have a medical examination prior to starting to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
